DIY Plate rack
This was a super easy and fun DIY that I was able to finish in one weekend! I had some really awkward wall space between my kitchen and my dining nook that I never knew how to style. So I figured why not make a cute little plate rack that I could use to fill up space but also display some beautiful things.
I’m going to walk you through the supplies I used and the steps I took to get this!

Here’s the supplies I used:
1×3 pine boards
1×2 pine boards
Unfinished pine trim
Dark walnut stain
Ryobi brad nailer
I was walking through Lowe’s one day and found these cool shiplap-like boards that look like beadboard, so I grabbed about 5 of these to use for my backing.

I used my Ryobi brad nailer to attach to the walls, trying to hit into as many studs as I could. I used a 1×3 to sit against my baseboard to hold these boards up while I nailed them in and to make them level, but I didn’t account for how crooked my walls were lol. So my backing ended up being level with the floor, but not with the walls. But we worked around that and it turned out just fine! But when you go to try it, just make sure you level it out from the sides.

I decided to paint the rack the same color as my walls, Behr Whipped Cream. I ended up needing to do about 3 coats.

I moved out into my garage to assemble the structure that I would be applying to the backing. I used 1×3’s for the perimeter as well as the interior shelves. I used wood glue and my nail gun to assemble.

You can add as many shelves as you want! I went with 4 and I’m happy with the spacing.

In order to attach the structure to the backing, I decided to simply attach some 1×2’s under each shelf and that’s what I will be nailing into the studs. It actually worked out really well!

My last step was to paint the structure and then attach my skinny trim! I decided to stain the trim dark walnut for the contrast against the white paint and I am obsessed with how it looks! I used my nail gun to put one nail into each side into the structure.
And here’s how the final turned out!

Super easy DIY! If you’re a beginner, this will be a fun start for you. It’s the perfect amount of measuring and cutting and assembling and it makes such a big impact. Let me know if you give this one a try!
