vertical molding
It’s crazy to see what a little molding and some paint can do to a room. That’s pretty much the only thing that changed in this space!
I’ve listed out the supplies I used and everything in this space here!

Here’s where we started…..

Yikes. The lighting. The terrible paint on the wall. Everything in this space made it feel so much darker. I wanted to push myself on this project and gave only 48 hours to get it done, which meant I didn’t really have a ton of time to change a lot of stuff. I knew a feature wall would be my best bet to make this space feel updated. I searched and searched for one, and while there was tons I loved, the simple vertical molding really stood out to me – plus it saved me a lot of $$$! When I got planning and looking at the types of wood, I didn’t want the “perfect” look of the pine boards. I really like the personality the furring strips had to them, plus they were only $1.50 a piece lol. I picked up 17 of them from Home Depot, along with a gallon of Behr Limousine Leather (a true black!).
I started out by outlining the rectangle of my wall with furring strips (my wall is about 8ftx17ft). It took me about 5.5 furring strips to outline the crown molding, the 2 side walls, and on top of the baseboards.

The remaining furring strips I measured to space out equally along my wall. I used my Ryobi brad nailer to attach them to the wall.

Since I liked the imperfect look of the furring strips, I decided not to caulk or anything. If you use pine boards and want a more finished look, definitely grab some caulk! I got right to work painting my strips.

I also painted the remaining 3 walls Behr Whipped Cream to brighten the room up (we still had the builder grade base paint on the walls….. not pretty).

And after 2 days, this was the end result! I changed out the light fixture and put down this Loloi rug, but otherwise everything else is pretty much the same! The bed I’ve had for years from Wayfair, but I’ve found a very similar one that I’ve linked on my LTK if you’re interested. I found my end tables on Facebook in 2013 and have lugged them around with me ever since! I switch out decor from other parts of my house a lot when I’m feeling a change and that helps a ton too! The lamps are always rotated haha.

This was a really easy and fun weekend project! Hopefully it inspires you to try out a molding project you’ve been thinking of doing – they’re so easy and make such an impact in a space!
Here are the step by step instructions:
1. Install boards along the top wall, bottom baseboard, and install 2 boards flanking each wall (so you’re essentially making a big rectangle out of your boards.)
2. Measure from the bottom of your top board to the top of your bottom board to get the height to cut the rest of your boards.
3. Lay the boards out and adjust them to figure out what width spacing you like best. Then you can go through and mark your measurements. I measured between each board as I went.
4. I used my brad nailer to attach to the wall.
5. I didn’t caulk because I had a certain look I was going for (the furring strips give off a rougher, less perfect vibe), but if you use pine boards you can definitely caulk.
Supplies:
1x2x8 furring boards ($1.50 a piece at Home Depot – I bought 17)
Brad nailer (owned)
Behr Limousine Leather (black) ($35)
Behr Whipped Cream (white) ($35)
Measuring tape (owned)
miter saw or miter box (owned)
